Service Learning

The year is being wrapped up and Service Learning has been officially ended. In these times we have has some great experiences and look forward to Service learning next year.

Amicus
Emilio and Greg
We entered Mrs. Goldsmith’s room to see the Amicus staff working hard.

“We’re getting pictures for this year’s Amicus, ” said Holly K. and Brendan C.

“We’re writing articles and taking photographs, logging in donations and sponsorships, page layouts, editing; we had Mr. Robataille help with the editing,” said Mrs. Goldsmith.

“Amicus is fun, and now I am trying to pick out pictures from Outside of the Classroom Week,” said Abby D.

“It’s fun knowing what the theme will be before everyone else,” said Caroline V. “You’ll have to wait to find out when the Amicus is published!”

We entered the first grade classroom and saw the first graders working diligently with their upper division friends.
“We’re helping the first graders write poems,” said sixth grader Sophia Y. “We’ve even got author, Mrs. Lyn Hoopes to help us!”

“We’re writing poems based on pictures,” said Skyler S.
“We’re helping the first graders with poems about pictures with animals in action, ”We’re having a blast!

“We had a lot of fun!” said first-grader Noah H.

“It was very helpful to have them write with us,” Mark A. said.

They really help me out, they help me do things, they help me spell words, they help me organize ideas,” Ashton K.

Friends Helping Friends
By Greg S and Emilio C

Greg and Emilio visited two of the four locations of Friends Helping Friends. First, we went to the library, where we found Suze B. and Lucy S. When asked, "What are you doing?", Lucy said, "Right now, we are helping Ms. Griffin save voice recordings so future book buzzers that are nervous about standing in front of the school can play a recording of them talking."
"This program will really help children who have trouble speaking in front of large audiences.
Then, we went to the gym. Ray B. said about Friends Helping Friends in the gym: "When Friends Helping Friends comes to the gym, we play with the kindergardeners and the fourth graders. We have a blast bossing them around! Just kidding!"

Student Led Activity - Can Drive

The Student Led-Activity is doing a Can Drive for the Humane Society shelter for animals as their Service Learning Project. So far, they have collected eight trash bags of cans and bottles in one week! The cans and bottles will go to provide food for the dogs and cats of the Humane Society. They are incredibly grateful for all the support from students and parents, and hope that people will continue to donate cans and bottles for this act of Community Service.

The Garden

Emilio visited the garden to find a lot of hard work on display.

Sam was edging and putting seaweed on the beds.

“We’re pulling out the cabbage stocks, getting the beds ready for next year,” Andrew K. said.

Andrew was pulling out the cabbage.

“We’re edging the beds and putting seaweed on them to get them ready for next spring,” Owen L. said

“The seaweed insulates the bed for the winter,” Jenna H. had to say about seaweed. “When it rots, it creates fertilizer.”

Mr. Walach wouldn’t let me leave without putting seaweed on the beds. I tried it and it feels so weird! I also had to try a turnip to be allowed to go back to Stites. The turnip tasted really good!

This fall, the garden team has harvested rutabaga, portuguese kale, carrots green beans, red kale, green curly kale, broccoli, cauliflower, pepper, lettuce, potatoes, garlic, beets, red and green cabbage, white turnips, spinach, sunflower seeds, lettuce—red, romaine, iceberg, bok-choi, and tomatoes.

Advocacy Group

The Advocacy Group has signed a petition to help the women of Atenco. Here is a quote from an article about the incident: "During a police operation in response to protests by a local peasant organization in San Salvador Atenco, more than 45 women were arrested without explanation. Dozens of them were subjected to physical, psychological and sexual violence by the police officers who arrested them."

Please help this group's cause by signing their petition to the Mexican Attorney General. The petition will be on the window outside Ms. Lord's room.
