FA Library Page

As promised, we have a lot of new books from the recent book fair! Please keep this in mind when you're selecting your next independent reading book, and as the holiday approaches when you'll have more leisure time. :)

Thank you to Sophia Yates for her volunteer efforts during the book fair. This was the first time we've used students and it was a success! Thanks, too, to FHF (Friends Helping Friends) for all the help preparing for the big event. They created wonderful posters, and assisted with many other tasks as well.

I hope you all enjoyed AuthorFest with Faith Ringgold. One of my favorite parts was Skyping with her during all school meeting.

Happy Reading!
Mrs. Griffin

Friends Academy Loses a Friend

Len Shartle, a sculptor and former FA parent, died unexpectedly at home last week. Len was a wonderful presence at Friends Academy even after his daughter (Czarina; Class of 2010) graduated. Many of you know of him from his plants in the FA Library. A popular one is the elephant ear plant (see picture below). Once the weather turned cold, the plants would start arriving until the library was transformed into an even more wonderful place. Then as the school year was winding down, the plants would leave for their summer home in his backyard or studio. Throughout the school year, he would be here watering and tending to the plants. He occasionally would take part in a science class, lecturing on carniverous plants -- a personal favorite of his.

His gift and legacy will continue as the plants return to the library this weekend. Some of his carniverous plants will also be at Friends Academy in both the library and classrooms.

Please take a moment to remember him and his family.

Andy Rodin, former Headmaster, wrote the following piece, reprinted here in honor of his passing:

Headmaster's Herald

May 3, 2011

Dear Friends Academy,

Fortunately, the old adage "April showers bring May flowers" seems to be proving true. After a month where we saw nearly record amounts of precipitation, not to mention constantly gray skies, May has arrived with sunshine and milder temperatures, setting the stage for what we hope will be a magnificent bloom.

This will not, however, be the first burst of color for those who have spent time this winter in our school library.

If you get to school early enough, you can sometimes catch a quick glimpse of the reason for this winter treat. Mr. Shartle, father of Czarina, who graduated from Friends Academy in 2010, has once again brought his assortment of plants to our library, where they can take a break from the cold and we can enjoy their beauty and the benefits they offer the atmosphere around them.

Several mornings each week, just as the first students are arriving, Mr. Shartle will pull up in his white pick-up truck and slip into the library with a gallon jug filled with water for his thirsty flora  my favorite, of course, being the huge Elephant Ear that twists and turns with alarming persistence toward the sunlight that beams in through the windows. A drink for the plants, a kind word for Mrs. Griffin and any other early-risers stationed near the bookshelves, and he's back on his way.

By the end of the year, he'll move his crop back outside so that they can soak in some fresh air on their own. But we'll have reason to look forward to our next cold season: Mr. Shartle and his plants, including the Elephant Ear, will return.

Well done, Mr. Shartle. And Happy Spring, everyone!

All the best,

Andrew M. Rodin
Headmaster
